Special Report on Longterm Unemployed

(NEWS CENTER) -- It is about as stressful a situation as you could ever find yourself in: thousands of Mainers have exhausted their unemployment benefits ... but have been unable to find work.

The Maine Department of Labor calls them "Exhaustees", and has set up a series of programs aimed at putting these Mainers back to work. Others refer to them as "The Invisible Unemployed" because they are not counted in Unemployment reports or as part of the workforce.

Oktoberfest: Brewfest

October 23, 2010
Coffee Shops & Restaurants throughout the Seacoast

Dinefest is a traditional “restaurant week” full of culinary delights at a pre-fixed price provided by many of our local restaurants. The week, October 23 through October 30, kicks off with a unique day celebrating the many fabulous coffees and craft beers of our region. It’s called BREWFEST, and it will be held on Saturday, October 23! This event is being held in partnership with the Maine Brewers’ Guild. During the day, cafes will serve non-alcoholic specialty drinks and demonstrate the many flavors of teas and coffees available. That evening, participating restaurants will feature one or more Maine craft beer, along with an appropriate entrée to partner with the beer choice. Some venues will also offer special entertainment. This project is under development.

Navy scrambles after subs shed stealthy coating

KITTERY, Maine (AP) -- The USS Virginia shed pieces of its sonar-absorbent skin while at sea, necessitating repairs that'll be made during a 14-month overhaul at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine.

The Navy acknowledges that there have been problems with the special coating that helps to make the Virginia and other nuclear-powered attack submarines in that class stealthy. But the Naval Sea Systems Command says there has been no measurable impact on performance.

The Navy says the most serious problems were limited to three of the first four subs in the class.

Spokesman Alan Baribeau says improvements in the application process have substantially reduced problems on newer versions of the submarine. There are now seven submarines in that class on duty.
