YCCC Student named to USA TODAY'S All-USA Community College Academic Team

Wells, Maine - Diane Dense of Wells, a student at York County Community College, was recognized among the top 20 community college students in the nation recently in New Orleans and was among the students featured in Monday’s USA TODAY. Over 1,600 students from over 800 community colleges were nominated for the 2011 All-USA Community College Academic Team.

The All-USA Community College Academic Team is presented by USA TODAY and Phi Theta Kappa (the official honor society of two-year colleges) and is sponsored by Follett Higher Education Group.   The program, created 21 years ago, is widely recognized as the most prestigious academic honor for students attending community college. Dense is the first student in YCCC’s history to win this award.

The awards ceremony took place at the Presidents Breakfast during the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Convention, where she was joined by her husband, Barry, and Dr. John Rainone, Dean of Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of the YCCC Foundation.

Dense was recently honored for being named to the All-Maine Academic Team at a ceremony, sponsored by the Maine Community College System, in Augusta, where she was presented with a medallion from Maine’s Governor Paul LePage.

Students are nominated and selected for the team by their college based on outstanding academic achievement, leadership and service. The All-Maine Academic Team program is co-sponsored by Bangor Daily News, Creative Awards of Scarborough, Phi Theta Kappa, and the MCCS.

Dense has earned a GPA of 3.71 and holds a career goal of teaching children with sight disabilities.  She will graduate from YCCC  in May.
