The York County Shelter Programs

The York County Shelter Programs

The York County Shelter Programs, an emergency
homeless shelter in Alfred, Maine, would appreciate
the donation of a working evaporator and condenser
unit for a 10'x12' walk-in freezer.  The use of television converter
boxes have resulted in very poor or no television reception at the
Shelter. The donation of a basic Time Warner cable service
that would enable the residents to have the opportunity
to watch the news and some programs would be
greatly appreciated. Please call Mary Doyle at 324-1137
or email Mary at mqdoyle@gmail.com if you can help
with either one of these needs.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Service Project Grants Awarded

Recently the Maine Commission for Community Service challenged communities across Maine to develop volunteer service projects that unite community sectors in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Our challenge was met with an overwhelming response of 26 grant applications. We are happy to announce, the Maine Commission for Community Service, awarded 16 organizations $500 grants to implement Martin Luther King Day of Service Projects.
We encourage local citizens to contact a project in their community and take part in the Martin Luther King Day of Service. This special day of service is an important way for Maine’s people to experience the significance of service, volunteerism and collaboration amongst their neighbors. These service projects will not only impact their communities, but celebrate the legacy of Dr. King and his commitment to service, non-violence, and diversity.

Awards Ceremony

Several members of the York County Sheriff’s Office and a York County Assistant District Attorney were honored at the New England Regional Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) Conference on Tuesday evening (11/9/2010).  The awards ceremony was held at the Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire.

The group was honored for outstanding work on two major OCDETF Investigations, the investigations into Samuel Morrell’s drug organization and the Iron Horsemen Motorcycle Club.  Both investigations resulted in numerous arrests and significant seizures of drugs and drug proceeds.  The successful conclusion of the investigations resulted in major disruptions of the flow of drugs into Maine.

Oktoberfest: Brewfest

Brewfest
October 23, 2010
Coffee Shops & Restaurants throughout the Seacoast

Dinefest is a traditional “restaurant week” full of culinary delights at a pre-fixed price provided by many of our local restaurants. The week, October 23 through October 30, kicks off with a unique day celebrating the many fabulous coffees and craft beers of our region. It’s called BREWFEST, and it will be held on Saturday, October 23! This event is being held in partnership with the Maine Brewers’ Guild. During the day, cafes will serve non-alcoholic specialty drinks and demonstrate the many flavors of teas and coffees available. That evening, participating restaurants will feature one or more Maine craft beer, along with an appropriate entrée to partner with the beer choice. Some venues will also offer special entertainment. This project is under development.
