Wells High School Student Named Best Entry from Maine in National Essay Contest

Bridget Boyle Earns $1,000 Scholarship

The U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) is pleased to announce that Bridget Boyle has written Maine's winning essay in the Institute's 24th Annual National Peace Essay Contest.

Each year, the Institute selects a question that relates to its prevention and reconciliation work in zones of conflict around the world.  Bridget's essay, "Of the People, By the People: Citizen Participation and the Pursuit of Peace," addressed the intersection between governance, corruption and conflict.

"The 2011 contested challenged the students to go beyond the news headlines and analyze the impact that corruption can have on effective governance and how it shapes international peacebuilding initiatives," commented Pamela Aall, senior vice president of USIP's Academy for International Conflict Management and Peacebuilding.
