Berwick school well contaminated with E. coli

BERWICK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - RSU 60 Superintendent Paul Andrade confirms that one of the two wells that feed the Eric Knowlten School in Berwick has been contaminated with E. coli.

Andrade says that none of the students have shown any signs of being sick and have all been given bottled water. The school is following health department protocol and says the students are safe to wash their hands with the water, but just not drink it.

The contamination has been confirmed by a second test performed by the school district. This weekend they plan on flushing the well with chlorine. Parents have been informed of the contamination.

Weatherization program helping 'Keep York County Warm'

ALFRED, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Seventy-five students from high schools across York County used the homes of strangers as their classroom for a day, learning some handy skills and helping their neighbors in need prepare for the winter.

"It is a heck of a lot different than reading it out of a text book and taking a test on it you know," explained Nick Cady, a senior at Kennebunk High School who helped winterize a home in Alfred.

"I feel real good about helping these people out and doing this and getting some experience doing some of the stuff I wouldn't mind doing after I get out of high school," he added.

The students were taking part in the United Way of York County's Keep York County Warm program, which seeks to assist homeowners by weatherizing their homes to help cut down on their heating bills.

Bishop blesses site of new Catholic church

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Bishop Richard Malone joined parishioners and contractors to bless, and then break, the ground of the site of a new Catholic church in South Berwick.

In 2008, the aging St. Michael's Church in South Berwick was closed and sold to the town to be transformed into a new library.  Members of the congregation joined with parishioners in Berwick and attended mass and gatherings at Our Lady Of Peace Church.

Our Lady of Peace, which was converted from a farmhouse to a Catholic church in the 1920's, also was showing signs of its age, and was too small to accommodate the combined congregation.  Parishioners worked together to raise money to build a new church, and after years of effort purchased a parcel of land on Agamenticus Road in South Berwick.
