News

KITTERY, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The fire on board a nuclear-powered submarine at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is out.

Seven people were injured fighting the fire including three naval shipyard firefighters, two crew members and two civilian firefighters. All have been treated and released from the hospital.

The fire started around 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday in the forward compartment of the sub and spread to the primary living areas and command and control spaces.

Crews from as far away as Boston and South Portland were called in to help fight the flames.

The shipyard says the sub's nuclear reactor was not operating at the time, and has not been affected by the fire.  It remains safe and in stable condition.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The shipyard gates remain open for workers to report for their shifts as usual on Friday.
