Difficult Conversations About the Care of an Elderly Parent

Difficult Conversations About the Care of an Elderly Parent

Seven years ago Lucy and her husband, who were in their 50s, left their home and jobs in Chicago and moved to Maine. Not to retire or experience a slower pace of life, but to care for Lucy’s elderly mother.

“At first she was still quite independent,” says Lucy. “She was driving, swimming at the local pool every morning, buying her own groceries, and cooking her own meals.

Swett Family Bike Ride

Swett Family Bike Ride

Tuesday was the Swett family bike ride. I didn’t ride, I was part of the picnic crew. The plan was that we would all meet at Two Lights State Park around noon. The 12 cyclists, ranging in age from 10 to 63, pedaled off mid-morning from CycleMania, where the out-of-towners rented bikes. Read more.

SIGNS YOUR ELDERLY LOVED ONE MAY NEED CARE AT HOME

Because of several medical conditions, in the last years of his life Bob was unable to fend for himself. Fortunately, he was able to stay at home with the help of his family and a team of caregivers. Bob’s children oversaw his medications and doctor’s visits. They took him to the electronics store so he could buy the latest gadget, boiled him lobsters, and brought him Dilly Bars for dessert. The caregivers helped in a variety of ways, from keeping Bob safe in the shower to keeping him company.

As children and adults throughout Maine enjoy a well deserved summer vacation, the United Way of York County and several community partners are thinking ahead to make sure that children enter the new school year ready to learn, equipped with the tools they need to succeed, by joining a statewide effort to provide donated items such as backpacks, calculators, pens, pencils, rulers and composition notebooks to children unable to afford them.

"One of our primary goals at United Way is to create and support efforts that help children and youth meet academic milestones and graduate on time," says Kathryn Davis, President and CEO of United Way of York County. "We are excited to join forces with other nonprofits and the ‘Tools for School’ campaign to help get these children off on the right foot in September."

Children's Show, "The Frog Prince," at Springvale Public Library

Children's Show, "The Frog Prince," at Springvale Public Library

Springvale Public Library will host the University of New Hampshire’s LITTLE RED WAGON professional children’s theatre troupe on Tuesday, July 17th at 2:00 pm at the Nasson Little Theatre, at 457 Main Street in Springvale for a performance of The Frog Prince.

Written and directed by UNH Professor David Kaye, with music by Tim Allen, The Frog Prince is based ever so slightly on the story by The Brothers Grimm. An ordinary fairy tale kingdom finds itself under an evil spell that makes everyone-especially the princess-miserable. Luckily, a good-natured frog arrives just in time to break the spell and return things back to normal.

Alzheimer’s: Just One Cause of Dementia

Alzheimer’s: Just One Cause of Dementia

I attended my Aunt Patti's funeral last week.  She was 78 and had lived with dementia for the past 14 years. What I remember most about her is that she was usually smiling and happy.
