Facebook Maine Networking Mixer at Havana South

Facebook Maine Networking Mixer at Havana South

Havana South on Wharf Street in the heart of Portland's Old Port quickly filled up with people this past Monday night that have at least two things in common, they love Facebook and they love Maine. No, they do not sit around and talk about how cool Facebook is, they meet up to connect and have conversations in real life! This fun-filled casual mixer is a great opportunity for anyone that is looking to network with cool local businesses, chat with local creative media artists, meet leading local social media technology experts or mingle with people that they might otherwise only know on Facebook.

For about the past year and a half this group has met monthly and the turnout has grown each and every time.

Alpha One-Adaptive Driving Education Fundraiser

Alpha One-Adaptive Driving Education Fundraiser

Alpha One is launching our first fundraising initiative to enhance our Adaptive Driving Education program and we are looking for your help.

This program is one of our oldest, and has been offering driver evaluation, assistive driving technology consultation and driver education and training since the early ‘80s. The ADE Program has helped hundreds of Maine consumers to become licensed drivers and enjoy the freedom of mobility

Our goal is to lower the overall cost of delivering this valuable service to Maine people who want to get back on the road again, by soliciting support from individuals and businesses who share our desire to help others remain independent.

Donations from foundations and individuals will provide for the purchase and adaptation of a new van and the operation of the program over the next five years.

Maine Humanities Council offers In Defense of Nature: Rachel Carson and the World Around Us

WELLS, Maine – In Defense of Nature: Rachel Carson and the World Around Us, a one-day conference presented by the Maine Humanities Council, will take place on Friday, May 6, 2011, from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm at Wells Reserve at Laudholm, Wells.

Rachel Carson, a biologist and naturalist, initially gained fame as the author of The Sea Around Us, a paean to the rhythms of the ocean and the life within it that captured the popular imagination in 1951. When a friend described the death of birds on her property after it was sprayed with pesticides, however, Carson spent years researching and writing her eloquent and decidedly confrontational work Silent Spring.
