Bees - Part 1

Bees - Part 1

As if I don't have enough to do around our small farm I am now planning to add bees to the mix!  I have a friend at church who is a bee keeper and needed a good place to put a hive.   I volunteered my property and asked him if I could put a hive of my own next to his.  That way I could learn from him!  He agreed and so I started collecting equipment.  In this video I talk about the foundation layer the bees will use to build their combs.  Bees and gardening actually go quite well together since the bees will help to ensure that your crops are pollinated!

Movies: "Snow White and the Huntsman"

“Snow White and the Huntsman” is the first feature-length movie directed by Britain’s Rupert Sanders -- and it’s an impressive debut.  (He landed the job largely due to an award-winning commercial for a video game called “Halo 3.”)

There are some weaknesses -- the movie is about a half-hour too long, for one thing -- but I have to say I enjoyed seeing it as much or more than a lot of bigger-name summer popcorn flicks, thanks in large part to its outstanding production values.

Women Behaving "Badly" (or so some might say)

Women Behaving "Badly" (or so some might say)

Just finished three books that celebrate women living freely

1.Brave women who broke out of the norm in the 19th century and launched what became a 72-year campaign toward women's right to vote.

2. Vicky Tiel, inventor of the mini-skirt and darling of the glitterati and someone who really knew how to follow her bliss.

And 3. Jane Juska, who at 66 refuses to give up on intimacy, takes out a pretty darn risqué personal ad, and has the adventure of a lifetime.  Enjoy....   READ MORE

No Longer a Safe Driver. What Should You Do?

No Longer a Safe Driver. What Should You Do?

Even when it was becoming clear that my 83-year-0ld mother should no longer be driving because she seemed increasingly confused, I waffled. Her doctor said she should give it up because she was having memory problems and her reaction time was slower than normal. I still hesitated. It was the one thing she enjoyed more than anything else — she loved driving aimlessly through neighborhoods and down country roads. Every yard sale along the way beckoned to her and she would often return with a trunkful of treasures. Her car was her refuge, a place of solitude and an escape from worry and stress. I just hated to take that away from her.

Movies: "Men in Black III"

The summer of sequels rolls on with “Men in Black III,” another lightweight outing with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as those ultra-secret government agents tasked with wrangling space aliens here on Earth.

This time around, Agents J (Smith) and K (Jones -- come to think of it, why didn’t they just name these spooks after their actors’ real names?) have a fierce villain to content with:  Boris the Animal (roaringly played against type by Jemaine Clement of “Flight of the Conchords”), who goes back in time to kill Agent K, the agent who shot his arm off and locked him up back in 1969.
