Saco/Sanford, ME, October, 2010 — Those interested in maritime history are invited to attend the final entry in the fall Sweetser Lecture Series on Thursday, November 4, at 7 p.m. at the Dyer Library, when Chester Hopkins, former Vice-President of Marine and Terminal Operations for French Lines, will present a personal narrative complemented with visual images, of commercial shipping's disasters at sea and in port in Fragile: Handle With Care - Maritime Mistakes.

Chet Hopkins grew up in Reading, Massachusetts, and is a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy.  He served at sea for 18 years with American Export Lines, working up to Master.  This was followed by ten years in Europe and fifteen years in the New York area working for German, Chinese, Korean and French steamship companies.  He retired  from the French Line in 2005.  Captain Hopkins continues to consult in the maritime industry in the U.S. and Europe.  He is considered an expert on containerization and, as such, has been retained by a number of Admiralty law firms and testified in Admiralty courts in New York and London.

From giant rogue waves to mis-stacked containers, there are countless opportunities for things to go wrong when transporting goods across the seas. Join Chet Hopkins as he shares stunning photos and stories of maritime mistakes and shipping disasters.

The lecture series is co-sponsored by the Sweetser Series Committee and York County Senior College. Tickets for each lecture are $5, payable at the door.  For more information, call (207) 282-3657.
