Kittery Man Completes Four-Mile Swim for Lighthouses

Warm cheers and applause, punctuated by enthusiastic comments like “You did it Gary!” filled the air at Kittery Point on the afternoon of February 26, 2011 as Kittery native and professional swimmer Gary Sredzienski emerged triumphantly from the frigid waters of Maine at the conclusion of the event, “Swim for the Lights.”

Sredzienski had just completed a four-mile swim in winter’s coldest waters, all to help raise funds and public awareness for the preservation of lighthouses under the care of the Rockland-based American Lighthouse Foundation and its local chapter, Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses.

The American Lighthouse Foundation’s fundraising goal for “Swim for the Lights” is $10,000, and just after the event, the total was a little over $8,000.

Teens Who Care

Teens Who Care

We are very proud of our young people in the State of Maine and we need your help to find teens who are doing good work in our communities. Too often we hear about all of the “bad things” teens are doing. We want to make sure that people know there are teens in our state who are doing “good work” and making a difference.

We are looking for Teens who are volunteering in their communities. We will be recognizing individual teens and teens who are working together as groups.  One individual or group will be highlighted each month on WCSH 6 and WLBZ 2. Each teen recognized will receive a $2,000 scholarship to the college of their choice. Groups will be given a $2,000 grant to be awarded to the non-profit they are helping.

Please help us find the teens and their inspirational stories to share around the state. Just go to our website and click Teens Who Care for an on-line form. No deadline.

Bill would extend Maine school year

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) -- Lawmakers are going to consider a bill to lengthen Maine's mandatory minimum school year by five days.

A bill before the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee on Wednesday would extend the school year from 180 days to 185 days a year. The bill is sponsored by Republican Rep. Peter Edgecomb of Caribou, who's also a member of the education committee.

A separate bill also to be reviewed by the education committee would mandate that the school year not begin before September 1.

The rule would apply beginning in the 2012-2013 academic year and would apply to elementary schools, secondary schools, the University of Maine System and the Maine Community College System.

Swim for the Lights - The Power of One can be Great!

Swim for the Lights - The Power of One can be Great!

One man’s quest to help save lighthouses is going to lengths few would dare imagine, let alone undertake.

On February 26, 2011, Gary Sredzienski, known affectionately along the Piscataqua River region and beyond as the “Creek Man”, will take to the river’s frigid waters to raise funds for the nonprofit American Lighthouse Foundation, based in Rockland, Maine, and the foundation's local chapter, the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses.

For his part in the upcoming “Swim for the Lights” event, Sredzienski will swim a total of four miles, departing from Odiorne Point in Rye, New Hampshire at 1:00 pm and ending the feat on the shores of Maine at the Kittery Point town dock around 5:00 pm.

During the swim’s route, Sredzienski will also make brief stops at the wave-swept Whaleback Lighthouse in Kittery and Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in New Castle, New Hampshire.
